How Does Natural Gas Service Work in Louisiana?
Louisiana is the third-largest natural gas consumer in the country. In 2020, natural gas consumption totaled 1,825 Bcf, more than half of which comes from the industrial sector and its chemical, petroleum and natural gas activities.
Louisiana is also home to the most active natural gas market center in North America, Henry Hub. This market sets the benchmark price on the NYMEX. Here, nine interstate and three intrastate pipelines interconnect and transport about 1.8 Bcf of natural gas every day, which is further distributed via more than 130 utilities.
Most consumers in Louisiana receive natural gas from a local utility, also called a local distribution company, or LDC. These companies, such as CenterPoint Energy, are regulated by the state Public Service Commission (PSC). They operate the systems that deliver natural gas to consumers, and they are responsible for maintaining gas lines and responding to gas-related emergencies.
