How Does Natural Gas Service Work in Ohio?
Ohio has a large population and is highly industrialized, making it one of the top 10 states in total energy consumption. In addition to being a top-10 natural gas producer, it’s also a top-10 consumer—using 1,336 Bcf in 2022. The largest consumption occurs in electric power generation, which has had a massive increase in natural gas use and now accounts for 40% of the state’s total consumption, and the state’s strong manufacturing sector, which accounts for 25% of its total consumption.
Natural gas is distributed throughout Ohio on over 100 pipelines through 34 local distribution companies (LDCs), which are all regulated by the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio (PUCO). Most consumers receive natural gas from one of these LDCs, which operate the systems that deliver natural gas to consumers and are responsible for maintaining gas lines and responding to gas-related emergencies.
In 1997, four of Ohio’s major utilities (Columbia Gas of Ohio, Dominion Gas, Duke Energy and Vectren Energy—now CenterPoint) created energy choice programs in which consumers can select a natural gas marketer to provide their gas supply. These marketers can often offer more rate options and a superior customer experience.
