ATLANTA, Ga. (July 18, 2024) – Atlanta Community Food Bank (ACFB) just received a new, compressed natural gas (CNG) fueled truck to continue delivering meals to those in need throughout 29 counties in metro Atlanta.

The CNG truck, gifted by Gas South, will reduce harmful emissions by up to 90%, burn cleaner than gasoline, and will cost less than gasoline.

“We want to help ACFB fulfill its mission to help end hunger in our community in a sustainable, cost-saving way,” said Carley Stephens, Gas South’s Manager of Community Affairs. “When you consider mileage and travel to neighbors throughout 29 counties, you understand this switch to CNG fuel significantly reduces ACFB’s operational cost while also greatly benefiting our environment.”

The truck is slated to hit the road and begin making deliveries immediately. With the CNG-powered truck, ACFB is projected to save $2,600 on gas annually compared to its standard diesel truck. This cost savings will help ACFB provide an additional 7,800 meals to the community. “Expanding our fleet with a truck that uses cheaper and cleaner fuel couldn’t come at a better time than right before school is out for summer,’” said Kyle Waide, ACFB CEO. “So many of the kids and families we serve depend on meals at school for nutrients, so this new truck helps us prepare to feed even more families in the summer months.”

Gas South’s gift of $175k for the CNG fueled truck comes after 17 employees volunteered at ACFB on Earth Day, packing more than 10,000 pounds of food for distribution to mobile pantries. With this new CNG truck addition to the fleet, ACFB estimates 34,500 more households may receive food through its mobile pantry program.

“Gas South’s purpose is to Be a Fuel for Good, which means not just supporting the great work of the Atlanta Community Food Bank through volunteer hours and donations but also providing them clean-fueled trucks for deliveries throughout metro Atlanta,” said Stephens.

Gas South strives to Be a Fuel for Good with 2023 efforts including multiple active employee resource groups, more than 1,270 volunteer hours logged, and $4.5M philanthropic dollars given to support nonprofits serving children and families throughout Georgia and Florida.
